On the other hand, when I’m disorganized and surrounded by clutter, well you know the rest of the story. I agonize!

Since first introduced in 2001, Apple’s iPod has taken the world by storm, occupying a huge share of the portable music device market. As an iPod owner myself, I can attest to this modern Walkman’s wonderful qualities: It is amazing to create and carry your own music library with you wherever you go. Listening to music can be inspiring, relaxing and motivating. iPods can hold thousands of songs, audio books, movies, TV shows and Podcasts, giving you an array of entertainment all stored in a pocket-sized device.

Your Personal Trainer:
It’s time. You’re ready, ready to start that fitness program you’ve been thinking about but you’re not sure how to begin. Getting started is often the hardest part because of so much conflicting information and downright misinformation about exercise.
One way to take that first step and to make it personally yours is to follow the F.I.T.T. principle. This acronym stands for Frequency, Intensity, Time and Type. If you are a novice exerciser, the F.I.T.T. principle can help you develop a program. If you’re already exercising, it provides a framework for making some changes in your program.

Setting Manageable and Measurable New Year’s Resolutions {FrugalLivingNW}
by Kari Patterson
Sacred Mundane
We sat on her couch as I recounted my parenting woes. The more I dumped the more I felt overwhelmed. Little things, seemingly unrelated, heaped verbally into the air until I sat in a thick fog of my own creation. I shook my head and looked at her, Where do I start?
Her simple response became my guiding principle for resolutions since.
Pick one thing and the rest will fall into place.

I like this photo because it reminds me that just because the days are getting longer, does not mean the days will be getting kinder. Wind, rain & possible snow awaits us in the great NW in the next few months.

The video marriage proposal gone bad video has made the top of the news this week with three million hits. A hopeful boyfriend made the proposal during a UCLA game on the jumbo tron, but things went horribly wrong when she refused and left distraught. After watching many YouTube videos of people’s accidents and misfortunes over the years I must say this one really impacted me. First, I felt very sorry for both the guy and the girl. Yet, it was the girl who had no control over events and did not ask to have one of her most embarrassing moments being broadcast before a stadium full of people and re-broadcast before millions more. You can hear people in the audience taunting her and forcing her to say yes. It is not fair to punish her again by making her relive it on the web.
In defense of this poor woman and all future women, I offer two suggestions:

As you know, not all products are created equal. We all spend a lot of money on products that we don’t really like and stick with the ones that we do. These products below are a compilation of great products that have been recommended to me, that are my personal favorites and have the highest consumer ratings. These are beauty must-haves and yet are also a great value! What more can you ask for?

It’s that time of year again. Millions of Americans are promising to get fit, break their bad habits, and spend more time with family and friends. On January 1st, many of us will toss our 2011 calendars into recycle bins, eager to begin the New Year with a fresh start. But the reality is, most of us will fall back into old patterns before we even hit spring.
A recent survey by FranklinCovey revealed the most common New Year’s resolutions. According to the survey, which polled more than 15,000 people, the most popular resolutions are: 1) getting out of debt or saving money; 2) losing weight; and 3) developing a healthy habit (e.g., exercise or eating healthy).

It’s the mess, messiest daaaaaay….of the year, here at the Rouse House. Yes, it is the day once again when Mama chucks her sanity to the wind and invites the children to participate in a little tradition called “frosting Christmas cookies.”
This is a beloved yearly ritual dating back to the ancient times of my own childhood, when my mother and sister and I put on our matching aprons and cluttered up my mother’s kitchen. However, when I think back to those days, I recall much less mess. Whether this is because my daughters are more exuberant with the sprinkles than I was as a child, or because children in general don’t notice messes and therefore my child-eyes were categorically blind to the frosting-hurricane we created, or because my mom was better at keeping things sane than I am, I don’t know.

Here is a sample of the worst fashion moments from 2011 as brought to our attention by the today show. These fashion horrors were very much real, and very scary as well.
Pre-stained coffee shirt (Alexander Wang) for Starbucks, Wood-panel swimsuit and an umbrella jacket.
But wait…there’s more!

As a person often engaged in the act of writing, I know well the struggle and frustration of trying to express one’s thoughts through the written word. Yet, as difficult as it can be, writing can also be satisfying, offering an outlet for thoughts and feelings and emotions that can be kept in a journal for private reflection or shared with others. Writing is so many things: It is storytelling and poetry and history and memories alive on pages. Sometimes, writing is even therapy.

A new study on the correlation between candy and violence may really spook parents. According to the study, children fed candy and sweets on a daily basis are more likely to be convicted of violent crimes as adults. Quick: Hide the Snickers bars!
Researchers from Cardiff University in Wales looked at data on 17,000 children born in a single week during April 1970 in the United Kingdom. The data, from the British Cohort Study, included detailed health and lifestyle information on the children at several points during their lifetimes, including ages 5, 10 and throughout adulthood.

Recently working on a presentation for “Creation of the Other,” I dug deeply into the art form of film. I decided to focus on one filmmaker to illustrate this point, that being Steven Spielberg. Imagine the host of images he has created with such films as Jaws (1975), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), E.T. (1982), Jurassic Park (1993), Schindler’s List (1993), and A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001), to cite but a few of the memorable films by this prolific and iconic filmmaker.

Oregon’s 20 worst charities list
By Oregon Attorney General
Press Release
Oregon donors should avoid giving to charities that spend most of their funding on telemarketing and administration
Attorney General John Kroger today issued the annual list of Oregon’s 20 Worst Charities.
“Most charities in Oregon do important work, helping the needy and supporting worthy causes,” said Attorney General Kroger. “But generous Oregon donors should be aware that some non-profits are little more than scams that provide little if any help to the causes they claim to support.”
In order to avoid being duped by unscrupulous non-profits, donors should review the Department of Justice Tips for Charitable Giving.

When my husband Tim was 2 years old his dad bought a huge toy semi-truck probably about as long as he was tall. He could have ridden on the thing I’m sure; however, Bill (Tim’s father) didn’t want Tim to destroy it being a 2 year old. So he gave it to Tim when he was about 17–If you know Tim’s dad at all, this “logic” would make a lot of sense.
Needless to say, Tim managed to keep it all these years and Elijah, (my delightful 5 year old) got a hold of it and asked Tim how it worked. Tim says openly, “Just push it along Elijah. Make noise, you know.”
A moment later Elijah says in frustration, “It isn’t working dad..!”

“It’s A Wonderful Life,” the 1946 Christmas film starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed, has become a holiday classic. And, many of us know much of it by heart. “Look, Daddy. Teacher says, every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings.” Now 63 years old, the enduring film is dated in many ways—shot in black and white, simple sets, and delightful dialogue that reminds one of a bygone era. Yet, the universal themes and lessons of this movie are timeless, as relevant in 2009 as they must have been a half-century ago.
At the time of its release, “It’s A Wonderful Life” did not do well in the box office, yet audiences over the years grew to love the film and it was eventually named one of the 100 best American films ever made. The story centers around the character of George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart), a frustrated businessman in the fictional town of Bedford Falls, just after World War II. On Christmas Eve, George is drunk and suicidal after $8,000 goes missing at his family’s building and loan.
