The healing power of our writing

December 28, 2011 --

By Erika Weisensee

As a person often engaged in the act of writing, I know well the struggle and frustration of trying to express one’s thoughts through the written word. Yet, as difficult as it can be, writing can also be satisfying, offering an outlet for thoughts and feelings and emotions that can be kept in a journal for private reflection or shared with others. Writing is so many things: It is storytelling and poetry and history and memories alive on pages. Sometimes, writing is even therapy.

Is candy REALLY turning our kids into a life of crime?

December 27, 2011 --

By Traci Scott,

A new study on the correlation between candy and violence may really spook parents. According to the study, children fed candy and sweets on a daily basis are more likely to be convicted of violent crimes as adults. Quick: Hide the Snickers bars!

Researchers from Cardiff University in Wales looked at data on 17,000 children born in a single week during April 1970 in the United Kingdom. The data, from the British Cohort Study, included detailed health and lifestyle information on the children at several points during their lifetimes, including ages 5, 10 and throughout adulthood.

Fashion Question: What influences your look?

December 26, 2011 --

by Cathy Rae Smith
founder of Culture Magazine
Oregon

Recently working on a presentation for “Creation of the Other,” I dug deeply into the art form of film. I decided to focus on one filmmaker to illustrate this point, that being Steven Spielberg. Imagine the host of images he has created with such films as Jaws (1975), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), E.T. (1982), Jurassic Park (1993), Schindler’s List (1993), and A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001), to cite but a few of the memorable films by this prolific and iconic filmmaker.

Oregon’s 20 worst charities list
By Oregon Attorney General
Press Release

Oregon donors should avoid giving to charities that spend most of their funding on telemarketing and administration

Attorney General John Kroger today issued the annual list of Oregon’s 20 Worst Charities.

“Most charities in Oregon do important work, helping the needy and supporting worthy causes,” said Attorney General Kroger. “But generous Oregon donors should be aware that some non-profits are little more than scams that provide little if any help to the causes they claim to support.”

In order to avoid being duped by unscrupulous non-profits, donors should review the Department of Justice Tips for Charitable Giving.

Is it toys or kids that have changed over the years?

December 22, 2011 --

By Gienie Assink,
Springfield Oregon

When my husband Tim was 2 years old his dad bought a huge toy semi-truck probably about as long as he was tall. He could have ridden on the thing I’m sure; however, Bill (Tim’s father) didn’t want Tim to destroy it being a 2 year old. So he gave it to Tim when he was about 17–If you know Tim’s dad at all, this “logic” would make a lot of sense.

Needless to say, Tim managed to keep it all these years and Elijah, (my delightful 5 year old) got a hold of it and asked Tim how it worked. Tim says openly, “Just push it along Elijah. Make noise, you know.”

A moment later Elijah says in frustration, “It isn’t working dad..!”

The story behind It’s a Wonderful Life

December 21, 2011 --

By Erika Weisensee
Milwaukie Writing Mom

“It’s A Wonderful Life,” the 1946 Christmas film starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed, has become a holiday classic. And, many of us know much of it by heart. “Look, Daddy. Teacher says, every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings.” Now 63 years old, the enduring film is dated in many ways—shot in black and white, simple sets, and delightful dialogue that reminds one of a bygone era. Yet, the universal themes and lessons of this movie are timeless, as relevant in 2009 as they must have been a half-century ago.

At the time of its release, “It’s A Wonderful Life” did not do well in the box office, yet audiences over the years grew to love the film and it was eventually named one of the 100 best American films ever made. The story centers around the character of George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart), a frustrated businessman in the fictional town of Bedford Falls, just after World War II. On Christmas Eve, George is drunk and suicidal after $8,000 goes missing at his family’s building and loan.

The mystery & stories behind Christmas plants

December 20, 2011 --

Holiday plants are more than they seem
Judy Scott,
Oregon State University Extension Service

CORVALLIS, Ore.— Decorating with poinsettia plants or giving a Christmas cactus to a friend are holiday traditions for many, but not everyone is aware that there’s more to these popular indoor winter plants than their bright leaves and cascading blossoms. Poinsettia is a common name for Euphorbia pulcherrima, a member of the spurge family, according to Linda McMahan, horticulturist for the Yamhill County office of the Oregon State University Extension Service. The plant goes by many common names worldwide, including Easter star, lobster flower, flame-leaf flower, crown of the Andes and noche Buena, she said. Its wild habitat is as close as Mexico.

A large propagation industry based in California grows up to 200 varieties for holiday decoration, McMahan said, and sales approach 100 million plants each year.

Christmas Excess — signs you have too much money

December 16, 2011 --

By Guest Opinion,

These two Christmas pictures represent the best signs that some shoppers have too much money and time on their hands.  The hamburger gift wrapping is quite hilarious, but the joke is on the consumer because you have to buy five different rolls of wrapping paper.   The eggnog within the actual egg is another picture that made me roll my eyes.

Ideas for new bedding on your Christmas list

Overcoming Bedding Boredom
by Angela Todd
Interior Design Angle

Finding stylish bedding is frustrating for most homeowners. Why? Because unless you want to invest in ultra fine bedding throughout each bedroom in your home, your choices via the Internet and at local stores are very limited. The lines carried for most middle class clients are uninspiring and predictable. Beds are generally the focal point of most bedrooms, so we suggest you do it in style!

Two weeks ago at High Point Furnishings Market in North Carolina, one of my primary tasks was to find bedding lines that were comprehensive, well-made, affordable, and didn’t look, well, cheap. I am happy to say after scouring thousands of square feet of ground, we found amazing lines that we are pleased to now provide to our clientele. We have options for master suites, guest bedrooms, teenagers and childrens rooms in all bedding sizes, design styles and colors. Our bedding includes duvet (or comforters), bedskirts, coverlet, euro shams, standard shams, and accent pillows. We even provide pillow inserts, so you won’t have to fuss with going to the store to finding the right size pillow for your inserts.

Question: I have always been a nervous person in general, and lately have been experiencing a high degree of stress. At times I find it difficult to get a full breath, my heart pounds, my thoughts race, and I get shaky. A friend made a comment that she thought I could be experiencing anxiety, which I had never really thought about. Could this in fact be what I am dealing with?

Answer: First and foremost, it would be wise to see your PCP in regards to the physical symptoms you are experiencing to rule out any medical causes. If all checks out clear, then chances are high that what you are experiencing is anxiety, complete with panic attacks.

Let the Holidays Begin!
by Lani Grass
Backstage with Lani

I love the holidays, I always have. Maybe it’s the weather change, the smell of cinnamon candles, the anticipation of gathering with family and friends or sipping hot cocoa in front of a warm fire? But it also can be a stressful time of year with all the planning and events on the horizon. In all the fuss and commotion, many of us think of ourselves last. But this season, it can be a different story…

For any holiday event, dressing for a party is like a balancing act. You want to look special with pretty make-up, sexy hair, and sparkly jewelry, but you still don’t want to look over-the-top, like you’re trying too hard, right?

Christmas Miracle Dog: Pooch survives house fire
By Evergreen,
Oregon writer

It is Christmastime and I am feeling festive. One seasonal fare I would love to turn into an actual tradition (along with outrageous holiday sweaters and nativity lawsuits) is the sharing of Christmas miracle or Christmas hope stories. These stories pull us in deeper. What could be better this year than combining “Christmas” with “miracle” and “cute dog”. The story below tells about a dog that survived a terrible house burning. As I was doing a radio interview earlier this week, I was thinking about my own advice to the listeners. How do we cut costs during hard economic times, yet still entertain and invite others into our homes? It’s tricky, but there are some simple strategies to keep in mind. I promise that if you choose even 3 of my suggestions, and incorporate them into your entertaining during the holidays, you’ll be guaranteed to save money.
