1. Pack a cooler with a bottle of Pinot Noir, 2 plastic tumblers, some olives, crackers and brie

2. Bring a classic, wool Pendleton blanket to spread out on the beach

3. Hit Powell’s on the way out of town, grab a copy of Breakfast at Tiffany’s by Truman Capote, and a book about Oregon Coast Tide Pool Ecosystems and NW Coastal Wineries

4. Wear classic Ray Ban sunglasses, even if it’s overcast

About three years ago, when I had emerged from the haze of my son’s infancy, I was ready and rested enough to reclaim a genuine love of mine: Reading. Feeling a bit isolated, I also wanted more time with a small and special group of family and friends, my inner circle. So, I combined those two needs and started my own book club. I’ve been reading and reaping the rewards of it ever since.

So yesterday 5 police officers came to the studio to be photographed with their dogs, he told me it would be tough because some of the dogs didn’t get along and that it might be hard to pose everyone. In a matter of about 10 minutes, I had posed and taken the shots needed. He said “really we are done?”–surprised that it was all done so fast. Well it was a good thing because about a minute after that, they got a call and all had to go because there was a bad guy on the run.

The more Americans engage in one of their favorite pastimes — sitting around — the shorter their average life span, a new study suggests.  The effect remained even after researchers factored out obesity or the level of daily physical activity people were engaged in, according to a study of more than 120,000 American adults.  It’s just one more reason to “get up and walk,” said Dr. Jay Brooks, chairman of hematology/oncology at Ochsner Health System in Baton Rouge, La. “The message here is like everything in your life. People need to recognize that the things you do every day have consequences. And if you’re in a job that does require sitting, that’s fine, but any time you can expend energy is good. That’s the key.”

The salutary effect of exercise on being overweight or obese, rates of which are at an all-time high, have been well documented.

Teen and preteen heartthrob Justin Bieber has a heart as played out in the Late Night ABC Jimmy Kimmel cameo where the host unites a perpetual crying 3-year old who pines for Bieber (and created a video which went viral on You Tube) with Justin himself. It is a nice touch, please enjoy.

It may seem counter-intuitive to do a trend piece on sunglasses in the middle of summer after most people have probably shopped them back in May. However, if you’re anything like us, you have probably lost and/or broken that sweet pair of Ray Ban aviators you thought were so cool all those months ago. Well, now is your (second) chance to get ahead on the trendiest of trends in the sun-covering eyewear racket. We can see the future… and it’s looking like we could use a new pair of shades.

Sunglasses have always had the power to transform. Take it from Jack Nicholson who once said, “With my sunglasses on, I’m Jack Nicholson. Without them, I’m fat and 60.” Truer words have never been spoken, and thus we began our quest for our own pair of Jack-worthy shades that will make us look cooler, thinner, sexier, and yes, more mysterious.

Dr. Summy To, owner and optometrist at the newly opened Myoptic Optometry on North Williams Street, had a few wise words for Portland’s serious sunglass shoppers. Being a doctor, she started off with some technical advice. “Always make sure you have 100 percent UVA and UVB protection in your sunglasses.” Check. Don’t get cheapo frames from drugstore stands. She also mentions that, “polarization makes a world of difference in cutting down glare, and we highly recommend it to all of our clients.”

Oregon Economist’s blog…A quick comment on a Susan Nielsen column on Sunday about paying students for achievement.  In her column she is skeptical (but I am not sure that anyone has seriously suggested this as a state-wide policy, have they?) and mentions some disappointing results from a Harvard econ prof.  That prof would be Ronald Fryer and he has indeed had poor results from paying disadvantaged students for good grades.

The Oregon Food Bank has a great idea: They are encouraging gardeners around our state to plant a little extra (a few plants or even a row) to help the hungry. OFB’s “Plant a Row” campaign is a simple but important way to make a difference. “Simply plant a little extra in your garden,” says Rebeca Siplak, OFB Learning Gardens program coordinator. “At harvest time, donate the extra produce to a local food agency.”

We waited an extra long time this year for some nice weather. Here we are in the middle of July and finally getting some long stretches of sunny days. Yesterday, with temperatures in the low ’80s, I soaked in the beauty of the day. I drank iced tea on the back porch while my three-year-old son played on the swing set. I splashed him with the hose as I watered our thirsty plants. We picked and ate blueberries off the bushes. It was a reminder that some of life’s greatest pleasures are simple ones.

Yesterday I didn’t want to do it. But I did.For about a month my friend Jenny and I had been talking about holding a yard sale. In fact, we set the date and then the “stuff” started piling up in my garage …When I tried to get out of the sale (Good Will sounded much easier), Jenny talked me back in to it. I think I have too many bad memories of making yard sales more difficult than they should be, from past years’ experience.

Question: I am normally an upbeat, happy person, however I have noticed that in the winter I don’t have much energy and I often feel sad for no apparent reason. Usually by the time school is out I am fine, but this year it hasn’t gone away yet. Any thoughts?

Answer: Assuming there are not physical or hormonal causes contributing to your symptoms, I would strongly hunch that you are being affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). SAD is a form of depression that occurs in relation to the seasons, most commonly beginning in winter. SAD can begin in the fall for some, and in very rare circumstances can be brought on by the summer.
