By “Miss Nelson”,
Salem Elementary Teacher,
It was strange to come home from work today and read about the shooter in Tualatin who came to his estranged wife’s work and began shooting.
My students and I had spent this week talking about Condition drills. These are the school shooter or intruder version of fire alarm or earthquake drills. We have done them in years past, but this year our school resource officer came and presented to the staff about the multiple reasons that schools may be targeted for shootings. These include domestic violence, homicidal students and former students like Kip Kinkel, and most recently, terrorist acts like those seen in Russia and the Middle East. He shared with us that when he first learned that schools were becoming targets for terrorists that he was skeptical, but that same day terrorists targeted a school in Israel and the real danger of it began to hit home.
I felt a similar skepticism, until my family relayed a news story from a few years back stating that Oregon was one of six states notified by federal law enforcement that a computer disc had been found in Iraq with detailed information on school floor plans and crisis planning documents from the eight targeted school districts.
The training took us beyond what you would normally think about in terms of school safety—things like ensuring that all outside doors are securely locked and making sure everyone who comes into the school has a pass or a school badge. It made the idea of a person with criminal intent finding their way into the school with the intent to harm children, and being the first line of defense for protecting 20-30 little bodies, extremely real. Today my students and I practiced how to get to a safe, secure location and then act like you are playing hide-and-seek so you don’t make any noise that would alert an unsafe person as to your location.
I am extremely grateful to our resource officer for seeing the importance of practicing for the unlikely and unwanted, the same way we practice for earthquake and fire drills. Police and military personnel live by the mantra that in a time of crisis you do what you practice, so you need to practice frequently and correctly.
I was also extremely grateful that all of my students stayed still—no rapping pencils, nervous laughter, or tapping feet gave away that students were in the classroom during the drill. However, when I see a classroom full of children calmly and deftly executing an exercise intended to prepare us for a Columbine-like disaster, I can’t help but think—is this really where we are in society?
A previous school year, when a gang member shot himself on school property, my students wanted to know what I would do if someone with a gun did get into our classroom. I was faced with the futility of the tools of protection that school teachers and students are allowed to have in public schools. My answer to my students was not to worry. It most likely would never happen, and if it did, it was my responsibility to take care of them, and I would. But what I was really thinking was, how?
It is so sad that our country has come to this. Growing up I always felt that all of the terroist type of events were happening in other countries and we didn’t have to worry about it ever happening in our country. Each time I hear of such events, a little bit of the child still within me dies.
well in israel they had a few school shootings once ,then a terrible school bus shooting.,,,thats it! ,,,and they simply armed the teachers after training, and a few upper classmen students .after a couple more attempts ,and the shooters deprived of their fun and shot down imediately ,,suddenly no more school shootings ,, these shooters are not afraid to die ,they intend to,but they want an unobstructed target or targets ,, till they are ready to go ,,to be shot down at once spoils the fun for them. they look for unarmed targets . like it or lump it thats the answer ,,arm and train.
Wow, bob J, I looked it up and you are right – Israel has had armed teachers for over 25 years now, and since then, not a single child has been harmed. While looking it up, I also found that there is a school district in Harrold, Texas that allows teacher to carry concealed weapons if they have a permit and crisis training. Right here in America! It is really hard to look at something horrible happening in our schools, but Kip Kinkel was right here in Oregon. I have to say, in an event like that (God forbid) I’d feel better knowing my child’s teacher was prepared to protect my child with more than just drills to “keep quiet so they don’t know you are there.”
thanks Rebecca,,anyhow in oregon by state law we can carry (with Permits) in schools ,campus’s bars churches ,and many other places a lot of states people cant ,,however there is a lot of fighting against it and some colleges have attempted to ban it on theirs and of course some private places have also tried to ban ,there is still a lot of contreversy yet.
when i worked at a state college ,before i retired , at that time was before the “shall issue” permits came in ,and couldnt legally carry on campus . some of my co workers and i agreed it was better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6 ,,so we discreetly carried tiny 22 magnum pistols in our pockets ,,and always someone in our group had at least one and maybe more so called assault weapons ,rifle in our car trunks with plenty of ammo ,we had a plan between us if anything happened ,anyone of us could break open the trunk if need be and retreive the weapon,,gladly it never did ,but we were prepared . could we have stopped a shooting or masacure in our area ,,?? maybe ,,maybe not ,,but a lot better chance than to be shot down like rabid dogs ,,,and could have saved many lives .by the way myself and the others were mostly war veterans and or sportsmaen and were well schooled and trained in weapons .
This is a real world we live in, with real killers who aim to do us harm. The sooner everyone starts realizing that and dealing with the importance that we must be able to protect ourselves and the children in our care, the better off we will all be. I’d rather err on the side of a protecting against more “has happened” stories and not be concerned with the “but what if” stories if law-abiding citizens arm themselves.
It’s terrible that our schools have to guard against school shooting threats, but I’m so greatful to have teachers, like you, to teach students saftey procedures in the event this happens again. Thank you!
yes,,Kay,,you got it right . yes are so many that worry what if that susposedly good person with the conceal permit goes bad or??? snaps?,or??? ,,granted it could happen ,but is very unlikely. id rather be in a crowd of a thousand with conceal permits than in a crowd of also a thousand where no one has or in a state/country where are no permits avail. as mentioned before ,,these demented shooters , look for places likely to be unarmed .(soft targets )
folks need to read the story of susan gratia hupp, (now congress lady, who to obey the law before texas had conceal permits left her 38 spl snubby revolver in the car to be law aa biding while going into lubys in killeen texas to eat with her mom and dad ,,so she had to watch he rmom and dad executed by the mad killer -shooter.thinking if only she’d brought her gun in ,she would have had the oppertunity to take a 2 handed rest kneeling over a table, take careful aim, and easily taken out the shooter with a head shot .. try to read this ,,,anyone
my apologies ,,Susan Gratia Hupp is a texas rep,,not a us rep, anyhow she did address congress and is a video of that on u tube , very powerful. if anyone interested goes to google and type in her name ,it will bring up lots about ,,and the u tube videos are accessable from there .
We live in an everything goes world and then are we surprised at when everything actually does go. Goes out the window.
Stop violence. Turn off the TV, read a book.
Great article, and welcome to the team! I appreciate your candid honesty in this article. As a mom of 2 little girls (ages 3 and 1), I am so saddened that these drills even need to be a reality in this world, but I am thankful for teachers like you who are willing to be there to protect and serve when parents are not around. Keep it up!

I’m glad that our school’s are taking the threats seriously, but it is sad that we’re having to take a part of these children’s youth away from them.
