I will not argue whether it’s nobler in the eyes of children to receive a scolding rather than a swat on the rear-end; however, I will ask whether it’s wiser in the minds of parents to discipline with methods other than spanking.

Every good relationship has a balance of yeses and nos. If you never said yes or no to anything, you would be a puppet. Finding middle ground is the give and take of a good relationship, in which you negotiate and persist when something is important to you.
This travel diary excerpt is from Travelin’ with Charlie blog which is an occasional travelogue, philosophical and spiritual journal of a middle-aged Oregonian widow, recently retired, who is trying out life as a fulltime RVer with her Golden Retriever, Charlie.
My brother Tom and I drove out to the Gorge with Charlie today and took some short hikes to a couple of the waterfalls. We took the Historic Columbia River Highway out of Troutdale, following the Sandy River south until it heads east towards Corbett.

“Reality is the leading cause of stress amongst those in touch with it” –Jane Wagner
Stressed out! Burned out! Overwhelmed! Over the edge! Losing it! Yes, 43 percent of us suffer health effects from stress. And did you know that an estimated 70-90 percent of all visits to physicians’ offices are stress-related? I finally sat down to watch the movie “Born Rich,” a documentary regarding some of the richest children (young adults) America. I can’t help but think how ridiculous it was to see these over-privileged children, many of whom (not all) seem to be so out of touch with real life.

The Portland Tribune and the Portland Monthly magazine have done stories saying it is time for the parade to change. Records show that attendance is continuing to slip. The case being made is that the festival has lost its identity and has become overtaken with too many exterior festival events. In essence, the festival has added too much and the parade itself has lost focus and has suffered.

Tired of reading about Carly Fiorina, the former Chairman and CEO of the merged Hewlett-Packard – Compaq? Fiorina and other successful women such as Condoleezza Rice, Sherry Lansing or Martha Stewart are the poster faces for the ‘You’ve come a long way, baby’ spin doctors. I applaud and laud the work success of these business women and hope all people learn from their wisdom and achievements. Indeed, some of these women are my heroes. Rock on!
However, what is happening for the rest of the women in the workforce? More importantly, what does the future hold for business women in the workplace?

By Evergreen,
It is now mid-June and the school-free summer is now in full swing. Sometimes the big summer family plans help to divert from the smaller plans such as getting your kids to do more housework and encouraging them to read more. Now is the perfect time to assign a book-a-month reading list. If you do not do it now, it won’t get done. It is also the time to set a list of yard work and house chores in advance for the summer. Take time out to write out a list of all the things your children can do to help with their extra time. Here is a bonus tip: Make a long list and let them choose the summer chores they want. That way they have a choice in the matter and you can hold them to their word.

The level of control I maintain in our household sometimes is par with the level of interest I have in being decapitated. Which is to say, none. None control sometimes I tell you!!! I think this simple household truth is most plainly evident in the frequency (or lack thereof) with which I get to watch my own television.

Maybe you’ve heard that a woman needs to be loved by her husband and a man needs to be respected by his wife. Seems simple enough; however, if you’re like the average man or woman, you’re thinking “Sure, that all sounds great, but what does it mean?”
Men often define love differently than their wives, while women often don’t know how to define respect. If both you and your spouse have these needs, but don’t know what they are, how can you satisfy each other? Without a definition, it’s like trying to throw a dart at a board you cannot see.
Last April it was reported that Oregon’s high school drop-out rate Is veering downward for most schools and all racial demographics. Then in May the State announced that due to a miscalculation the rate is worse than reported. This was the third miscalculation in the past 17 months. As it stands nearly one out of five students never graduate. This is unacceptable.

The success comes with both good and bad news for women audiences. The good news is that it has awakened Hollywood to the fact that featuring films that appeal to the second half-of the human race can actually make a handsome profit. Attention lavish Hollywood producers: you may want to direct your money to the Oregon Women’s Film Initiative for your next project.
